Charming Forge as it once operated is no longer in existence. In its place remains small overgrown brush, and decomposing trees that was once a part of the original forge. Today a small trickling system runs next to the old forge area that flows directly into the Tulpulhocken Creek. Charming Forge was erected in 1749. Hessian soldiers were detained during the revolutionary war and brought to the area as prisoners to build the mill run. The mansion, built between 1774-1777 contained nearly 100 employees, living in the surrounding homes, worked around the clock to keep the forge in operation. In 1763, Henry William Stiegel known as "Baron Stiegel" purchased the forge. He thought the 3,000 acre site was "charming", so he called it Charming Forge. Stiegel eventually went bankrupt and was put into debtor's prison where he was freed by the (William) Penn Family. The property was sold at a Sheriff's sale. Stiegel's nephew, George Ege, purchased the property. Stiegel moved back into the mansion with his nephew where he remained for he remainder of his life, at 1785. Edge continued to live their until his death in 1828. We can only envision the beauty that this land once held, with it's serene, environment surrounded by tall trees and lovely landscape. The slow tunnel of water following it's own path down the rolling slope of south Mountain, until joining with one of many small rivulets flowing through Womelsdorf. The beauty that this site held must have been breath taking! Today the old forge area sits quietly awaiting the fate of nature, just as it did for thousands of years prior to the arrival of our fore fathers over two hundred years ago. It is quiet, serene, beautiful and peaceful in a very natural setting. It represents the philosophy for our name and the products we carry. So relax, enjoy and be charmed!!! |
